episode #5 / Air Date: 10.7.66
written by Bob & Wanda Duncan / Directed by Sobey Martin

For some reason, Doug and Tony fall into their latest time period slightly apart; Tony precedes Doug by a minute or so. They're in Louisiana, as the last battle of The War of 1812 is about to begin in 1815. All these British Redcoats are running about; the time travelers are captured as spies. The British colonel (Carrol O'Connor) has a bloody rep and sentences them to execution at dawn. In the Time Tunnel complex, General Kirk has invited a British general to observe and verify things; this British general (also O'Connor) is the descendant of the colonel.

How much someone would like this episode probably depends on how much they like O'Connor's interpretation of a 19th century British colonel and a modern British general. The general is on the elderly side, while the colonel is more middle-aged. A decade later, O'Connor would be best known as Archie Bunker, the epitome of crass Americanism, so this sheds a different light on all his previous performances. I think he overdoes the Brit accent bit, coming across as almost amateur hour, and his colonel is too snide, while his general too fuddy-duddy. BoG's Score: 5 out of 10

Epilogue: Doug & Tony land in a jungle and see natives about to sacrifice one of their own..
