Battle Beyond the Sun (Russia)

AIP distributed this re-fashioned Russian film (Nebo Zovyot - "The Sky Calls") via producer Roger Corman who omitted his name from the credits and via (re) director Francis Ford Coppola, who used an assumed name. I wonder if sci-fi fans in 1963 knew what they were in for when they headed to theaters to watch it. It's slow and talky, and has nothing to do with its American title. It should really be called "Conversation in the Office" or, at best, "Spacewalk along the Rim." There is no battle and nothing more than a passing reference to the sun. The only action comes from a spaceship crash and an encounter with bug-eyed monsters late in the film. The monsters were apparently spliced in from a separate Russian film, or perhaps added by Corman and Coppola; they are completely out of place in an otherwise realistic story.

Peter Bogdanovich's attempt at re-casting a Russian SF flick - Voyage to the Planet of Prehistoric Women - is much more entertaining. If you must watch Battle, I suggest fast-forwarding through all of the conversations and just stopping at the special effects scenes, which are sometimes impressive.
