British actor Michael Gough has died at age 94.

The star, known for his role as Bruce Wayne's butler, Alfred, in Tim Burton's "Batman" films, passed away on Thursday. The cause of death is unknown.

Gough started his acting career playing a range of roles in Hammer movies, including 1958's "Dracula" (a.k.a. Horror of Dracula) and "Phantom of the Opera" in 1962, before going on to win a Best Actor Tony award for the stage show "Bedroom Farce" in 1979.

He then rose to prominence playing Alfred Pennyworth in Burton's "Batman" franchise from 1989.

Though best known for his roles in horror films and the Batman films, Gough also had roles in Konga (1961), They Came From Beyond Space (1967), Trog (1970) and The Boys From Brazil (1979).
