Spawn (1997)

The irony with this version of McFarlane's demonic super-hero is that the filmmakers boasted that they went independent and got away from the studio system method of creating bland fantasy/sci-fi films.  But, just like McFarlane's comic book, there's nothing innovative or exciting about this effort to present a more edgy and creative heroic force. Originally, Spawn was McFarlane's 1992 debut of a new super-hero for Image Comics, just after McFarlane and several other top artists-creators broke away from Marvel Comics. But, I always found McFarlane's execution to be boring and cliched. And so, this film... as in the comics, the main character is a special ops liquidator who is murdered and goes to hell; he makes a deal with the devil and comes back as Spawn and we watch him suffer some more as we get bored.  BoG's Score: 4 out of 10
