This was the follow-up to RE-ANIMATOR (1985), the one about bringing dead things back to life. This, loosely based on one of H.P.Lovecraft's works, is about entering another dimension and having that dimension acting on ours - in a horrific fashion, naturally. Our senses, mostly our eyes, can only see things which they are designed to see. This story proposes what exists beyond our usual senses, always alongside us, just not observed unless certain vibrations in reality are adjusted.
Jeffrey Combs and Barbara Crampton, the stars, were also both in RE-ANIMATOR. Combs plays the assistant to Dr. Pretorius (Ted Sorel); they uncover another dimension in the lab they've set up in a spooky old house and Pretorius is... taken away (I won't dwell on the details). Combs is the prime suspect in his mentor's murder but is taken to  a mental hospital due to his ravings. Enter Crampton, playing a radical young psychologist, and it's only a matter of time before they're back in that spooky house. Ken Foree (Dawn of the Dead) plays the policeman assigned as security.

The one who takes the prize for creepiness in this one is Pretorius; as played by Sorel, he has many unhealthy fixations involving the pleasures of the flesh, besides his slightly obsessive scientific curiosity. He usually looks like he's covered in slime, a reflection of his inner sleaze. Combs also begins to mutate, in a slower fashion, due to his brief contact with the other realm. He also develops strange new creepy appetites (prepare to squirm). The film combines the concept of parallel realms with grotesque monsters and all kinds of sadomasochism and sexual perversity. It's as much about the inner mind and inner demons as it is about all the then-shocking visuals. Some of it reminds of the HELLRAISER films. If it doesn't repulse too much, it's worth a viewing. BoG's Score: 6.5 out of 10
