AMOK TIME (season#2, episode #34)  Like a Star @ heaven Like a Star @ heaven  Air Date: 09/15/67
Directed by Joseph Pevney  Like a Star @ heaven  Like a Star @ heaven  Like a Star @ heaven  Like a Star @ heaven  writer: Theodore Sturgeon

The first episode of the 2nd season to air, this offered a radical re-thinking of the show's now most-popular character, Spock. Except when affected by alien spores or a space disease, Spock was always the ultra-logical one, showing no emotion. The audience, like Kirk, assumed that when the subject of Vulcan mating methods came up, it would be handled logically; not even close. An ancient culture, the Vulcans are subject to traditions & rituals that precede their turn to logic. But, I think no one would have guessed it would all be this out of control, this violent -  as written by sf writer Theodore Sturgeon. And these Really Were Vulcans we later see here, not just actors with pointed ears. Later series failed to capture that Vulcan mystique which we become immersed in here.

Kirk vs. Spock - "to the deth" or until the Vulcan lady sings
The later duel on the planet Vulcan (planet first depicted here) between Kirk and Spock has become one of the most famous sequences, even among non-Trekkers. That memorable, snazzy music score and the two Starfleet officers trying to slice each other with strange Vulcan blades has entered the mainstream cultural lexicon and awareness (check out, for instance, the comedy film The Cable Guy,1996, if you don't believe me). But my favorite scene occurs in the turbolift with the main trio, just before they beam down to the planet's surface. Spock asks Kirk to accompany him down as a friend; there is a pause and, as we anticipate, Spock asks McCoy the same thing; no wisecracks from McCoy here. The scene is fantastically scripted, directed and acted.
The prominent Vulcans here are T'pau (Celia Lovsky), a high-ranking Vulcan who refused a seat on the Federation council, T'Pring (Arlene Martel), Spock's almost-wife... and Stonn (Lawrence Montaigne), T'Pring's suitor and Spock's rival. Stonn (and Montaigne) ended up popping up again in the made-for-the-web film Star Trek-of Gods and Men (2007), as, of all things, Uhura's husband (guy sure gets around, eh?). The follow-up episode to this was Journey to Babel, where we learned why Spock's parents did not attend the marriage ceremony in this one. BoG's Score: 9 out of 10

Extra Trek Trivia: the remastered version of this episode with new FX is one of those that has an entire actual new scene added in: in a far long shot, we see the tiny figures of Kirk, Spock and McCoy walk towards the ceremonial area, and we see a long shot of the Vulcan landscape. This featured the 1st appearance of the Vulcan hand salute, suggested by actor Nimoy.

CLASSIC TREK QUOTES:
McCoy: "Jim, you've gotta get Spock to Vulcan."
Kirk: "Bones, I will, I will, as soon as this mission is complete..."
McCoy: "NO! Now, right away. If you don't get him to Vulcan in a week, eight days at the outside, he'll die.(pause) He'll die, Jim!"

T'Pau: "What thee are about to see comes down from the time of the beginning, without change.
_____ This is the Vulcan heart. This is the Vulcan soul. This is our way.
"

T'Pau: "Do not interfere, Kirk. Keep thy place."

T'Pau: "Kroykah!"
