World Without End (1956)

This one has everything - if one considers the classic pulp sci-fi of spaceships & spacemen the epitome of everything science fiction. It begins with a 4-man (including Hugh Marlowe and Rod Taylor in one of his first roles) crew in one of those classic rocketships, wrapping up a trip to orbit Mars, and then becomes a time travel tale into Earth's far future - year 2508. Then there are giant killer spiders, caveman mutates and a hidden underground civilization. What more could one ask for?

It's established here that Earth suffered that terrible atomic war in year 2188. The underground society is indeed civilized, but there's a problem; births are few. The women all look striking, but the men all seem old or undernourished. One of these (Booth Colman) is a troublemaker, envious of these new vital men. Can the men from the past restart the society of the future? Sometimes, all it may take is a bazooka and a knife fight!

Of course, let's not get too carried away; there are some less-than-stellar moments. The big spiders look like paper mache. And, I don't get why the astronauts/time travelers start out from year 1957, as if in the year after this film was made, about 50 years of progress had taken place. However, the recent DVD release (a double feature on which this was paired with Satellite in the Sky) reminded us that this was a widescreen color picture. Nice! BoG's Score: 8 out of 10

The basics of this story were emulated in later fare such as The Time Travelers (1964).

Without End of Trivia: A VERY EARLY ROLE FOR ROD TAYLOR, 4 YEARS BEFORE THE TIME MACHINE...
